Youth Speaker entry #25: Adnan Arshad (Pakistan)

I am 27 year old working as Researcher: Agriculture and Forest Manager in an organization Potohar Organization for Development Advocacy (PODA) since 2012.

My working area is completely rain-fed forest region dependent only on rainfall and community have small landholdings. In 2012-13 I have implemented project titled “Protect Endanger Forest Species and Promote Pressure Cooker” supported by WWF-Pakistan.

Population living in forest area are completely dependent on forests for wood fuel, make fire to cooking food. Due to high elevation the air pressure is very low which required maximum number of hours to prepare food with maximum wood/kg. Under that project focused group discussions has been done with forest living communities and mobilized people to stop cutting of engender Pinus roxburghii (chir pine) and Quercus incana (white oak) plants. Awareness campaigns were organized to aware the locals about importance of forest as universal food producer and consumers of CO2. More than 500 efficient pressure cookers were distributed among the community to promote efficient methods of cooking food with minimum fuel energy to save forest.

Another project I’ve implemented (June, 2014) titled “Moist Temperate Forest Rehabilitation and Reforestation with Community Participation” supported by District Forest Department. Targeted forest is highly vulnerable to climate change directly alter the frequency and intensity of Cedrus deodara (deodar), Picea smithiana (spruce) plants distribution, including wildlife and invasive species. Under the project capacity building trainings of forest community particularly women and youth on forest conservation with reforestation technologies.

Capacity building of women farmers

Capacity building of women farmers

People learned about micro-catchment, eyebrow and rectangular mulch plantation techniques to rehabilitate plants after rainfalls and floods.

The impact of the project showed significant effects on forest plants species conservation with revival of wildlife. The objective of project is to upgrading the forest management skills of locals into productive, and cooperative, enable them to make the optimal use of available natural resources with care.

Currently (March, 2015-16), I implementing innovative plantation project in province of Punjab titled “Promoting Plantation of Olive Potential Varieties to Ensure Food Security and Soil Sustainability” funded by International Green Foundation (IGF). Under the project I and my team planting 1500 olive plants/year on marginal, degraded hilly soil, convert it into cultivated forest to overcome the environmental changes.

Technical trainings about plantation, nursery raising and post harvesting are organizing to facilitate the dry land community. This project will empower locals to produce oil and value addition to improve their livelihoods skills.

During my field working I have introduce geographical information system (GIS), remote sensing for forest mapping and development of climatic adaptive forest models to control reducing emission from deforestation and degradation (REDD).

Daegu, South Korea “Be a Green Man” organization invited me in largest forest plantation campaign during World Water Forum-2015. I deliver lectures/sessions in colleges and motivate young students about forest and Climate, global warming, facilitate Korean youth in plantation, and early forest management. Organizers honored me with title of “Green Thumb Man”

During my stay in Forestry congress, I will share all my project success stories with lesion learned with challenges faced during project implementation. Community mobilization and sensitization about forest conservation, afforestation and reforestation frameworks. My sharing will be dependent on motivational sharing, skill development for youth, real case studies and strategies to involve youth in forest management.

      • Forests are colonies of Plants (dominantly Trees) having a life cycle spanning from reproduction to death
Among the tangible goods and services of plants , the timber fuelwood ,food & fodder fulfilling the basic needs of food cloth and shelter , are ,therefore , of dominant , immediate and preferred interest ,for the human population particularly those inhabiting the forest areas.
Extraction of naturally diseased , dead, dry, wind fallen and over mature trees is the most important activity required for silvicultural management of forests . It allows and facilitate the hindered natural regeneration beside providing timber and fuel wood for human needs.

  12. forest area is in declining state, as a result we are suffering a lot. Will your project lead to proper National policy n implementation regarding the forestation & climate change.?? what do u expect in this regard? as attention of relevant authorities is a concerning issue.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Mr. Aftab; This is one of the biggest hurdle to lead national policy and implementations because they Govt. have too older rules and laws regarding deforestation. We are working with full capacity and compiling all the data set related to plants population, soil type, available species, community response and law enforcement for trafficking of timber. Punishments are very low and unrealistic so we are drafting National Forest Policy and will share with ministry of Forest and Climate Change asap.
The drafting policy will carry attractive punishments for the illegal timber mafia.
We are looking for some research and institutional support from local schools, collages and universities to include at least one plant in a year will be planted by a single student. These type of activities will encourage and aware new generation about clean environment.

    • Dear Sajid Khan, I am trying to link with Govt. forest departments but unfortunately they have lack of men power and funds. Yeph! you are right Pakistan still decreasing forest area and plants population, the major fact is adverts climatic condition and high vulnerability to glaciers melting which resulted as floods and forest uprooting with soil erosion. One most important reason is increase in temperature which damages pine forest directly in Margalahills forest.
Youth can do it in right way to promote climatic adaptive plants species and aware the forest community about its importance.
